Club's  History

On December 2 of 1933 Montevideo Basketball Club was born.

A group of people from that era decided they were going to start a team and they finally did it.

After going through a few different names they finally decided on the name Montevideo Basket Ball Club in honor of the city its in.  The first gym was located between the streets of Martin Garcia and Republica in the city of Montevideo.

It is here that the "Reds" start taking shape, and their first steps.

Later on the team was moved to a different location in Montevideo to were it finally is today and were its is best known for which is Porongos and Martin Garcia.

Sometime during the sixties Montevideo built a beautiful arena which at that time was the pride of our nation.  At that time there were a select few that had an arena like ours with a roof and parquet floors.

Our team has participated in different divisions of our national basketball league, at the moment we are in third division, but we remain hopeful that some day we will return to the second and first division.

Great players have worn our "red" jersey among them was Nelson "Fogata" Demarco who was 4 time South American champion and 3 time Olympic Bronze medallist.

Miguel Falci was another of the great players to have worn our jersey, he was viewed as a revolutionary of our basketball and he himself was a South American champion.

The last time the team won the championship was in 1986 edging out Welcome(name of the other team) and it was for the third division title.

That victory propelled us up to the second division in 1987 after having suffered for 13 years in third division.

In 1989 when Defensor and Sporting joined forces to become one team we had the opportunity to move up to first division, but first we had to play the best out of three with Atenas (another team name) in the Cilindro Municipal de Montevideo, after beating them twice we won the right to be promoted to first division.

After only one year in first division we found ourselves back in second division the following year to remain there for seven years until 1997 when we won the promotion back to first division which we stayed there for a couple of years to fall back down in 1999.

Today we are fighting to get back to second division and eventually to first after suffering a painful elimination from our national league due to economic reasons.

In 2008 Montevideo reborn from the ashes as the phoenix en wins the Uruguayan 3rd division championship.
